The new automated collection system will include container expansion
Porto Alegre is preparing for a significant transformation in its waste collection system, with the city hall announcing a new tender for automated waste collection services. This process comes at a crucial time, on Christmas Eve, with the expectation of starting the new contract in March.
Proposals for the tender will be opened on January 22, with a maximum budget of R$75.82 million. The tender includes the inclusion of 2,750 metal containers for the collection of organic waste and 500 polyethylene containers for dry waste.
The winning company will have to provide nine trucks for the collection of organic waste, of which seven are operational daily and two are in reserve. For dry waste, four trucks will be needed, three for daily use and one as a spare. All trucks must be new, with the exception of leased vehicles which can be produced from 2021, but with a maximum age of five years.
Additionally, the successful contractor will have a period of four months to organize the personnel, tools, equipment and facilities needed to perform the services. The contract will last two years, with the possibility of renewal for another three.
Meanwhile in the city the expiry of the emergency contract with the Conesul company is approaching, which has been responsible for the collection of organic waste in the city center and in the surrounding neighborhoods since the expiry of the contract with the Porto Alegre Limpa consortium. The city council also decided to increase the number of containers by 550, returning to the volume expected by the previous consortium by September.
This announcement comes after a previous emergency award attempt in June, which ended unsuccessfully following the withdrawal of the company Plural Serviços Técnicos, which had submitted the lowest value proposal. This announcement represents a continuous effort by the municipal administration to improve waste management and the efficiency of collection services in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.
