Hundreds of prison officers have been released
Last Saturday, prison officials who had been held hostage by prisoners in Ecuador, a country experiencing an intense wave of violence, were released (13).
According to the prison agency SNAI, more than 130 people have been released from various prisons in the South American nation.
“The security protocols and the joint action of the police and the national army have allowed the release of all the hostages held,” reads a note released by the agency.
Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa congratulated his country’s security forces for successfully freeing prison officers.
“Congratulations on the professionalism and courage demonstrated by the Armed Forces, the National Police and the Penitentiary Service,” wrote the president.
In total, more than a thousand people have been detained since last Monday (8), when the state of emergency came into force in Ecuador.
The security crisis facing the country has worsened further after the attack by criminals on a television station.
