Ukrainian drone attack injures 2 children in Voronezh, Russia

A state of emergency was declared Tuesday in the southern Russian city of Voronezh after a Ukrainian drone attack injured a 6-year-old boy and a girl, authorities said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said five Ukrainian drones were destroyed by air defenses over the Voronezh region and three others were intercepted. The ministry said four more drones were intercepted in the Belgorod region.

Yelena Fedyainova, whose 6-year-old son was injured in one of the attacks, said the drones first struck around 2:30 a.m. and blew out the window of her apartment.

“There was a bang and a flash,” Fedyainova told reporters. “I picked up the baby: there were shrapnel everywhere and smoke.”

A girl, about 10 years old, was injured in the same attack, authorities said.

Voronezh, a city with more than 1 million inhabitants, is about 250 km from the border with Ukraine. The city’s mayor, Vadim Kstenin, said a state of emergency had been declared in the area to deal with the impact of the attack.

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Russia has an air base near the city where some Sukhoi Su-34 bombers are based, according to Russian media. Russia often employs fighter-bomber aircraft during air strikes against Ukraine.

Russian news agency Shot reported on Telegram that at least 15 explosions were heard near the airbase and that some drone debris fell near an apartment building.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports.
