Goalkeeper John, 27, was introduced by Botafogo last week, but his name only appeared in the IDB on Thursday. To sign the goalkeeper, Glorioso spent around 1.5 million dollars (around 7 million reals, at current prices). The archer’s contract lasts four years.
John was revealed by Santos, at Alvinegro Praiano and was one of the highlights of the team’s journey to the 2020 Libertadores final, having earned his starting place following João Paulo’s injury. After losing space at Santos, the goalkeeper was loaned to Internacional, where he remained until the middle of last year, playing 14 matches there during this period. The player was subsequently loaned from Santos to Real Valladolid, Spain.
Before Botafogo’s proposal, Santos was interested in counting on the goalkeeper, to be João Paulo’s shadow in Peixe’s goal this season.
Botafogo’s interest in John is long-standing. The athlete had been monitored by Glorioso’s scout since 2022. The goalkeeper was in fact one of the names studied by the club’s football department to replace Gatito Fernández in the mid-2022 window – at the same time as Lucas Perri was signed.
With John registered in the Campeonato Carioca, the archer will be able to make his debut in the goal of Botafogo who will play against Bangu, on Saturday, at 4pm, at the Nilton Santos stadium.
