Combining the talents of Michael Mann, Johnny Depp, Christian Bailey and Marion Cotillard, Public Enemies stands out as an excellent film. Modern classics thanks to Mann’s digital camera and especially Johnny Depp’s latest excellent film.
Michael Mann’s People’s Enemies is not the first film inspired by the “career” of American bank robber John Dillinger, known for his visits to the Midwest during the Great Depression.
Johnny Depp stands out in the shoes of the famous gangster. During the release of the film, the director himself admitted that Johnny Depp has a lot in common with his character:
When we started talking about People’s Enemies, he revealed to me that he had a long interest in Dilinger and that he reminded him of certain characters from his past. I felt like there was something diligent in it.
Experimental?
From an aesthetic point of view, Public Enemies is visually one of the most daring films in Michael Mann’s career. It should be remembered that in 2009, when the film was released, the use of a high-resolution digital camera for a historical film was heretical in the eyes of some. At the time, such a choice was experimental.
Rendering is tough and tough, openly going beyond the boundaries of the medium. Light thunderstorms from the window edges, impressionistic clouds strewn across the flat sky, and skeletal tree branches indicate a loss of information in the picture.
Because unlike a movie, HD is not flattering. Close-ups reveal all the pores of Johnny Depp’s skin, often distracting these exterior details. The violence there is filmed raw as a security camera: a machine gun explodes; Blood is spilled on a white shirt; And the body will fall to the ground.
This staging, voluntarily naked and anti-spectacular, gives us a flat truth about death.
Johnny Depp is in the best condition
As for Dillinger, he is graceful and a bit mysterious, like any character played by Johnny Depp. He is also a classic American (anti) hero, completely self-made, with a tradition dating back to the great Gatsby. In love with his own legend.
The scenes between Dillinger and his girlfriend, Billy Freshet (Marion Cotillard) are probably the most intense in the film, but their romance hardly has time to start when they are already apart.
In Michael Mann’s films, everything ends from the beginning and is considered only the present moment. Nothing beyond that can be stored, not even memory. It is in this prism that Public Enemies is an excellent film and that the performance of Johnny Depp is more valuable.
Public Enemies leaves the Netflix catalog on June 30th.
