In the Copinha quarter-finals, Flamengo faces Aster, the team that eliminated Palmeiras in the third phase. After struggling against Botafogo-SP, Rubro-Negro strengthens and gains confidence to go even further in the tournament. With only Corinthians and Cruzeiros considered “big” still alive in the Copa São Paulo, a title that seemed unlikely is becoming increasingly possible.
Since the end of the group stage, Flamengo has been playing Copinha with an alternative team, mixing the under 20 reserves with the under 17 athletes. All this is due to the pre-season trip of the main team, which will miss the first rounds of the Cariocão, and so the best young players will play in these matches for the top team.
This ‘new’ Flamengo from Copinha had never played together, and made his debut against São José, in the third phase. On that occasion the team played surprisingly well, with Welinton and Walace standing out. In the next match, against Botafogo-SP, Rubro-Negro opened the scoring after 17 minutes and seemed to control the match. When we got closer, the Sao Paulo team equalized and added excitement to the end of the match. Despite the scare, Flamengo remained focused and managed to make it 2-1 before the final whistle.
Aster became known for being the team that eliminated Copinha’s current two-time champion, Palmeiras, in the third stage. Subsequently, the team advanced in the duel against Atético Guaratinguetá, in the round of 16. Previously, the Sao Paulo team led group 23, with Sport in second place and eliminating Santo André and Cruzeiro-AL, as well as beating Oeste in the second phase.
The team from Itaquaquecetuba, Sao Paulo, is a club-company founded less than a year ago, and promises to invest in the youth categories. And there is nothing better for this start than gaining prominence in the country’s premier youth competition. Last year the Under 20s had already won the Gold Cup, undefeated.
Flamengo and Aster will face each other this Friday (19th), at the José Liberatti Stadium, in Osasco, at 7pm (Brasilia time). The match will be broadcast on Cazé TV and the winner will face the winner of Cruzeiro and Coriba in the semi-final of the tournament.
