New series production in the US was lower in 2023

Since the advent of streaming, the number of original series produced in the United States has increased on all the platforms we know, such as Netflix, Prime Video or HBO. However, this phenomenon, called abroad PeakTV, finally seems to be losing strength. This is because, according to data from Ampere Analysis, the number of new series produced in the United States in 2023 decreased.

The numbers show that in total, 481 seasons of original series were produced last year. A sharp decline if we look at the previous two years, 2021 and 2022, where 633 original American series were recorded in each of them.

The most impressive thing is that even in 2020, a year which was significantly affected by Covid-19 and saw a reduced number of productions, the number of new seasons exceeds that of 2023: that year there were 510 seasons of original series aired wave.

The strike in Hollywood is one explanation

Produced less at home, brought more from abroad

Contrary to what was observed in productions shown in the United States, the data showed that the number of series imported from other countries grew. A total of 367 series in American streaming catalogs were made outside of the country.
