What is it about?
The young couple say they were victims of robbery and kidnapping, but for the police, their accounts of the events do not hold water. Why were the victims so calm? What if it was all a joke? This three-part documentary series from the makers of “The Tinder Scammer” examines the consequences of our tendency to snap judgments and the damage done by law enforcement when they decide the truth isn’t reality.
A nightmare came true
After the success of Making a Murderer a few years ago, Netflix is known for the quality of its True Crimes, a documentary series that deals with all kinds of criminal cases. Some have stood out from time to time, such as The Watts Affair: Chronicle of a Family Killing (2020) and The Tinder Scammer (2022), the story of Don Juan who conned his victims.
It’s the same team that’s now offering a documentary series called American Nightmare in VO, which looks back on the 2015 investigation. The American frontier, because it’s in a classic form – the female kidnapping form – but which has hit the West Coast.
This new production is a great success, provided you like the genre. In just three episodes, the directors repeat the sad story of Aaron and Denise, a couple that no one wants to believe. When a young woman was kidnapped, the police became convinced that her companion had committed the crime. When she magically reappears 48 hours later, investigators are convinced she lied to get revenge on her boyfriend, who allegedly cheated on her.

Reason ? One year ago, David Fincher’s movie Gone Girl was released in theaters. On screen, the character, played by Rosamund Pike, fakes a kidnapping to frame her unfaithful husband (Ben Affleck).
The story takes an even weirder turn in episode 3, with a twist that should surprise you. Abducted Truth’s stunningly effective direction and editing will keep you switching sides every minute: who’s lying? what is the truth Are the police really doing their job?
The resolution of the story will say a lot about the judicial and policing system in the United States, and more generally about women who have experienced violence.
