Monsters on Netflix: Is This Anime a One Piece Prequel?

On January 13th, the One Piece anime made its grand debut on Netflix with the release of episodes of the new story arc “Egg Head”. But fans of Monkey D. Luffy’s adventures are in for more surprises, as an all-new prequel hits the platform this Sunday, January 21st.

Titled Monsters: Hell of the 103 Passion Flying Dragon, this miniseries is an adaptation of a story published by Eiichiro Oda in the early 90s. This one shot is available in the anthology. Wanted! (published by Glénat) was imagined several years before the creation of the flagship manga: One Piece (also by Glénat).

This story follows the story of the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma, who is saved from starvation by a young woman who decides to help her village by slaying a dragon that is terrorizing the residents. Although the publication of this manga precedes One Piece, Eiichiro Oda still decided to connect the two works in the same universe.

Many Netflix projects around One Piece

Thus, Ryouma appeared in One Piece during the Thriller Bark story arc. However, the latter did not appear in his true form, but as an immortal brought back to life by Gecko Moria, through Moria’s powers of the Shadow Fruit. And his physical resemblance to Roronoa Zoro is no accident, as Ryuma is a distant ancestor of the swordsman from the Straw Hat crew!

Among the projects developed by Netflix around the One Piece franchise, let’s recall the filming of the 2nd season of the live series this year. But also a show at an unknown date of The One Piece, a reboot of the animated series produced by the WIT studio (the first seasons of Attack on Titan).

Anime MONSTERS: Hell of the Flying Dragon of 103 Passions can be seen on Netflix and ADN and every Tuesday night on J-One channel.
