One Piece: Can we understand monsters if we’ve only seen the Netflix series?

Gone are the days when the One Piece saga was limited to Eiichiro Oda’s manga and its animated adaptation. On August 31, Netflix released the first season of its live-action adaptation, a project that fans have been eagerly waiting for, but it was crowned with success, as evidenced by the program’s renewal for a second season.

A few days ago, the platform posted a special episode of Monsters: Hell of the Flying Dragon 103 Passions online. This One Piece prequel, adapted from a one-shot written and drawn by Eiichiro Oda, follows the adventures of the samurai Ryuma, a distant ancestor of Roronoa Zoro.

Warning spoilers… or not?

If anime fans don’t ask, live-action viewers who have neither read the manga nor seen the anime series may wonder if it’s possible to watch this special episode without risking spoilers. .

The answer is yes, for the simple reason that this story was written several years before the release of One Piece. This early work also appears in an anthology manga in France Wanted! (edition Glénat), which offers a story A romantic dawn which foreshadowed the One Piece series.

New post-credits scene

Therefore, the plot of this episode is understandable to everyone, including Netflix subscribers who have never seen a single episode of the One Piece series. And we should also mention the presence of a post-credits scene, compared to the new, one-shot manga, which requires some explanation.

This short sequence features a zombie version of Roronoa Zoro’s samurai Ryūma. This meeting is obviously about a plot familiar to One Piece fans, Thriller Bark. For live-action fans, this bonus scene could serve as a teaser for future seasons of the show.

Note that in addition to being available on Netflix, the anime Monsters: The Inferno of the Flying Dragon of 103 Passions is also offered on the specialized platform ADN and will be broadcast this Tuesday, January 23 on J-One channel.
