The presidents enter the dispute as electoral leaders of Ricardo Nunes and Guilherme Boulos, who will re-edit the dispute between Bolsonaro and PT supporters in the 2022 São Paulo municipal elections
The electoral college’s latest moves in the dispute for Sao Paulo City Hall in this year’s elections they turned the confrontation into a national clash that is heading towards polarization between the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and current head of the federal executive, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The two most voted President of the Republic two years ago will meet again on the platforms of Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) e Ricardo Nunes (MDB).
The search for a polarization of the national conflict in Sao Paulo was expressed on Tuesday 23rd by President Lula. “It’s a very special thing. It’s a direct confrontation between the former president and the current president. Between me and that figure (in reference to Bolsonaro). And we will present ourselves in the elections. I was very happy to convince my partner Marta Suplicy (join to become vice president),” Lula said on the program “Bom Dia com Mário Kertész,” on Metrópole radio, in Bahia.
“I will not play to create conflict. I have to know that I am the president, that I have to talk to the people, that I have to play a more or less fair game so as not to cause problems later, when the elections are over, at the National Congress”, he added President.
Nunes quickly refuted the president’s speech. “Here in São Paulo it is not a ring, here the concern is to take care of the city”, he reacted in an interview with CNN, reinforcing what he has already underlined on other occasions and that is that the dispute would be between him and Boulos and not among national figures.
One day later, Valdemaro Costa Neto, president of the PL, reported that Bolsonaro has dropped the hammer and decided to side with Ricardo Nunes in the dispute against Boulos. The decision frustrated the federal MP Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), until then a pre-candidate for the party supported by Bolsonaro. He has since withdrawn and avoided comment on the controversy.
With the PL in agreement with Nunes, Lula also moves into the electoral college and manages to organize Marta’s exit from the Nunes government (she was secretary of International Relations) to embrace the Boulos campaign.
Marta and Boulos met for the first time and spent at least three hours together in the former mayor’s apartment in Jardim Paulista. Boulos classified the meeting as “excellent” and said the main challenge for both is to revive a democratic front to defeat Bolsonarism in Sao Paulo.
“This is an alliance that will not look to the past. It is based on commitment to the present and the future. Now, the confirmation of the ticket depends on the Workers’ Party,” Boulos said as he left the meeting.
The PDT officially supported Boulos on the 9th of this month at an event at the party headquarters in the capital. Among the supporters of the PED there was a need to create a “broad front” around the candidacy of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, an ally of President Nunes, who became close to Bolsonaro’s supporters.
The choice of Nunes’ vice president and the hiring of Bolsonaro are expected in February
Since February Bolsonaro Tarcisio de Freitas, governor of Sao Paulo, and Nunes will meet to choose the vice president of the Emedebista ticket. After the “hammer blow” in favor of the current mayor of the capital, Bolsonaro’s allies said Estadao that the former president will have a decision-making role in choosing the vice president. One of those listed is Ricardo Nascimento de Mello Araújo, reserve colonel of the Military Police who was director of the Ceagesp in the Bolsonaro administration and commander of the Rota between 2017 and 2019.
Bolsonaro has spoken little in recent weeks due to a break with his family. The former president’s full commitment, however, is expected starting in February.
Without Bolsonaro so far on the electoral front line, it fell to Tarcísio de Freitas to convince Mayor Nunes. The governor of São Paulo declared on Tuesday the 16th that he supports the candidacy of Ricardo Nunes. The statement came at a press conference after a state government event to announce subsidies for home purchases. Asked if voters can understand that the governor of São Paulo will be on Nunes’ side, Tarcísio replied: “Voters can understand, yes.”
On the sidelines in the dispute between Nunes and Boulos, federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB) also hopes that a national force will help her in the campaign. This is Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. After meeting with PSB members in Sao Paulo last Friday, the 19th, the vice president downplayed the fact that he was on a separate platform from Lula in the election campaign, and praised Tabata. He said she is “very prepared” and that it will be an honor to support her as more women are needed to “improve and elevate Brazilian politics.” “I will be very happy that you apply and can help you with modesty.” Tabata reciprocated the same day: “It is an honor to be able to learn from Geraldo Alckmin, someone who knows the dilemmas of São Paulo and Brazil and who has done so much for our political history. What a joy and what a responsibility to walk alongside him! “
