Thanks to dedicated shows and sold-out movie-karaoke sessions, the world of this musical has finally united pop culture. Which is not surprising, since it is built on the repertoire of the main musical group: ABBA.

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers, Mamma Mia! It’s one of the best antidote to the dark and chilly days thanks to its heavenly settings, its catchy music that stays in your head, and its haunting story.

The most fun shooting of a musical

If the energy that lights up the screen seems larger than life in Mamma Mia!, there’s a good reason. The actors of the film often partied during the filming. A behind-the-scenes video has also been shared by many netizens, in which we can see the actors having a few cups and another glass of alcohol before the shoot.

In this video, producer Gary Gotzman explains that the actors drank ouzo (a Greek aniseed liqueur) during filming:

“I think the unlocking and freedom that you feel in these actors is their daily diet in Uzo. It loosens things up a little bit, and you know, a few shots at breakfast and it sets you up for the morning. I think that’s where the sense of freedom and energy comes from.”

This good energy and this festive atmosphere culminated in a traditional evening at the end of the shoot, some photos of which were posted on social media, as seen in the tweet below.

Translation: Can we talk about the Mamma Mia party where all the actors are drunk? Including MERYL STREEP

A few years later, Christine Baranski explained Collider that the team did not drink ouzo during the drunken evening, but tsipouro, which is a Greek brandy stronger than ouzo, and which they leave drunk the next day. Which makes filming more dangerous, as he said:

“I think the three boys and Meryl only got to shoot the final scene, but luckily I think the camera was behind them all day. At the end, they were floating in the sea of Sophie. I don’t think we saw their faces. Because they all had one hell of a face!”

If you want to experience the intoxicating energy of Mamma Mia!, you can (re)discover the film, which is available on Prime Video. But hurry, because the feature film leaves the platform’s catalog on January 31.
