Oscars 2024 | How does it work and which Brazilians are part of the Academy?

Find out how being part of the Oscar Academy works and which Brazilians are members of the organization

With the revelation of Oscar 2024 nominees last Tuesday (23) and some controversies involving the absence of some names in the controversyIt’s normal for the public to be curious about how it works and which people are part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that votes and is responsible for the event.

Founded in 1927, when the first Oscar ceremony was held, AMPAS (as the Academy is known) today has more than 10,500 members worldwide, from different sectors of the film industry. To give you an idea, its members include actors, directors, costume designers, executives, producers, visual effects professionals, writers and many other types of specialists.

To be part of this selected group, the guest must be invited by the Academy and “supported” by two other members of its branch who are already part of the organization. The only exception concerns professionals already nominated for an Oscar, who are automatically considered as members, without the need for “sponsors”.

Although almost all AMPAS members are eligible to vote for the Oscar (there are some casualties through death, emeritus titles, etc.), since 2012 the Academy has been working to diversify its voting pool.

Proof of this is that at the time, according to data from the Los Angeles Times, its voters were mostly Caucasian (94%), men (77%) and over sixty (54%), while in 2023, according to Variety, this group now includes more women (40%), people from underrepresented racial/ethnic communities (34%), and members from countries outside the United States (52%).
