Sinner beats Medvedev and wins his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne

Jannik Sinner ushered in a new era at the Australian Open, capping a remarkable two weeks with a superb comeback to overcome Daniil Medvedev to claim his first Grand Slam title on Sunday.

Sinner came from two sets down to defeat Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 to become the first Melbourne champion in a decade other than Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal or Roger Federer, at first title clash since 2005 without any of the “Big Three”.

He dominated the tournament until the final, with a crushing victory over Djokovic in the semi-final, but had to work hard to earn his place as king and become the first Italian to win a major title since Adriano Panatta won the 1976 French Open . .

“It takes a while to process everything,” the 22-year-old said after becoming the youngest champion since Djokovic won the title in 2008 at Rod Laver Arena.

“I’m extremely satisfied with how I handled things. The situation on the pitch was very, very difficult,” he said.

Sinner’s star is on the rise and he set himself up for success on the big stage by defeating Djokovic at the ATP and Davis Cup finals late last year, when he led his country to a second title in the team competition.

A Grand Slam triumph was the next step in keeping pace with young Carlos Alcaraz, who already has two, and Sinner carried out his task in Melbourne efficiently.
