“The Snow Society”, a film available on Netflix, is based on the true story of a group of friends who survived a plane crash in the Andes in 1972. The film is an adaptation of the 2008 book of the same name by Pablo Vierci.
The plane – which departed from Montevideo, Uruguay, bound for Santiago, Chile – was carrying the Uruguayan amateur rugby team Vecchi Cristiani, from the Stella Maris school, as well as friends and family, to a tournament in Chile. It is important to note that of the 45 passengers on board, some died immediately after the accident, but the 29 survivors banded together to resist the extreme cold.
In one event, considered a miracle, it ended with the rescue of 16 survivors after spending 72 days isolated on the mountain, surrounded by a sea of snow.
One of the most surprising aspects of this tragedy is that the survivors were able to return alive thanks to the nourishment of the bodies of those who had already died. This decision was made collectively through a pact in which everyone agreed to give up their bodies to help others survive, if they did not resist.
