The last few years have seen a complete turnaround in the career of screenwriter-director Joss Whedon, the subject of numerous complaints related to problematic behavior on a set of projects such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Yes Justice Leaguewith actors Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher and Charisma Carpenter among i have more to say On (and in response to) Whedon . The list of former colleagues who sided with Whedon’s accusers has grown over time (e includes David Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar), but don’t expect Nathan Fillion to join that group. With season 4 of their ABC drama ending in May, but not before it comes out the spin-off with Niecy Nash titled The rookie: the feds Nathan Fillion settled in for a solid conversation with Smallville veterinarian Michael Rosenbaum for the latter In you podcast . After the theme of Firefly arrived, Rosenbaum raised the question of the canceled favorite’s return too soon without Joss Whedon, which Fillion said would have been “heartbreaking” as he wondered how that could happen.
At this point, Rosenbaum asked Fillion’s opinion on the aforementioned controversies involving Joss Whedon, eliciting a very specific response from Malcolm Reynolds’ interpreter:
listen correct me [if I’m wrong]. I read this article and at no time did it mention Firefly. I had a full one – it wasn’t my experience with this man.
When asked later how her experience with Joss Whedon was related Fireflyhere he is now Nathan Fillion replied:
Funny, self-deprecating, incredibly talented. Maybe a little obsessed. I mean, by his own admission, this guy is a work in progress and I appreciate that. I’ll be working with Joss again in a second. I’d work with him again in a second.
To be clear, in sharing his feelings about Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion has in no way dismissed the claims and reports of those who have talked about Whedon’s other projects. So he wasn’t exactly denying the idea that such allegations were legitimate, even though he showed no support to anyone by completely avoiding the subject. On the other side of this coin, dollhouse Star Eliza Dushku previously shared a long statement of support after you leukocyte Co-star Charisma Carpenter spoke about her alleged experiences, but didn’t call Whedon directly about how she handled her claims against the ex. So in case someone was wondering if Fillion would still put a future distance between him and Whedon professionally, clearly he isn’t. It’s unclear what the director will bring next from a creative standpoint, but if he needs someone first on the call list, he knows where to look.
A few words about a Firefly revival?
it is not clear if Firefly will never return to fans in any form of live action after Serenity feature, but it’s safe to say those odds got even worse after Joss Whedon’s backlash. And while he would seem skeptical of returning as Captain Mal with anyone other than Whedon at his helm, he would clearly be involved if someone took over with his creator input intact. But is that something they both talk about? Here’s how Fillion puts it:
We talk, we joke, we fantasize. If I say something too solid, it will go crazy. I hate being responsible for this shit. But it’s a whole cast and crew of people who have done a fantastic job on this job. It was short-lived, so he didn’t get a chance to suck.
It’s hard to think of a show that anchored more “relive this show” conversations than Firefly, with its one season launching a miniverse of comics. It’s not that fans of the Fox series have allowed the two-dimensional fee to influence requests for the show’s crew to get together for one final mission. (Or 8-13 final mini-missions, so to speak).
Just like Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon are still in touch, The noob totally featured a sweet reunion between Fillion and his ex Firefly (OR Crook) co-star Alan Tudyk returns for the Season 4 finale. Sure, it would take some narrative magic before Tudyk comes back, but this is the world of science fiction. However, it’s probably best not to feed your hopes.
