Vivo Play and Claro TV+ overtake ‘traditional’ streaming in the national catalog

The National Cinema Agency (Ancine) has released the Video on Demand Market Panorama (VoD) in Brazil in 2023. Among the data that attracts the most attention from the survey is the fact that the Vivo Play and Claro TV+ platforms surpass “traditional” streaming in the catalogs of Brazilian films and series. In total, the research analyzed 24 audiovisual service platforms.

The 5 best ‘streamings’ with the largest number of Brazilian titles

The Ancine report also shows that Vivo Play, Claro TV+ and Globoplay, together, have more Brazilian content than the sum of the other eight streaming platforms closest to the top 10 of national content (Looke, iTunes, Box Brazil Play, Google Play Movies & TV, Oi Play, Amazon Prime Video, DIRECTV GO and Netflix).

This shows how traditional streaming has low numbers in comparison. Amazon Prime Video, for example, has 401 Brazilian works. Netflix has even fewer, with 255 titles. HBO Max appears with 76 and Disney+ with only 19.

These numbers represent, proportionately, approximately 8.5% of Brazilian titles in the catalogs of the five largest streaming channels. In this regard, Box Brazil Play and Globoplay lead with 41.3% and 35.2% of Brazilian content. Star+ (3%), HBO Max (2.7%) and Disney+ (1.3%) have the lowest percentage of domestic works in the catalog.

Bill to encourage national content

It is possible that the number of Brazilian titles available on streaming platforms will soon increase. This will happen if the National Congress approves a bill regulating Video on Demand (VoD) (PL 2331/2022). The potential new law would set a minimum quantity of domestic films and series for certain applications, depending on the total number of works in their catalogs.

One of the proposals considered would be to include at least 300 works of Brazilian audiovisual content in catalogs with 7 thousand works or more. The Senate and Ancine are currently in negotiations to present the final number of the project.
