“We have to shake things up”: why Reacher broke the sacred rule of the books

Reacher has just finished its adventures on Prime Video with Season 2, once again full of action. But this one took some liberties with Lee Child’s books, bringing back Oscar Finlay (Malcolm Goodwin) from season one.

To do this, series creator Nick Santora first asked Lee Child for his blessing before realizing this surprise. But that’s not the biggest change fans have come across.

We remind you that season 2 is adapted from the book It’s bad luck In which Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) reunites with his former colleagues from the 110th Special Investigation Unit to investigate a series of murders that directly target them.

Except usually, Reacher always works alone! Nick Santora defends this decision in columns TVLine.

Look, the rules are that Reacher doesn’t work in teams. 110th is his team. It’s his family. They are his colleagues in the army, but he travels the world alone. So we know Reacher can’t have a motley crew following him from town to town. This is not a book.”

What does Lee Child think?

However, this change was substantial, setting a precedent that could continue: “We needed to get out of New York for an episode and shake things up. Boston was close, and we said, “Who’s in Boston?” At the end of the first season, we knew that our old friend Finlay was going to return to Boston. I contacted Lee Child because he is “The Godfather”, he created this world.

I said to him, “If Reacher was in the same town as someone he shared an adventure with, someone like Finlay, and he needed help to keep the bad guys from harming him, would he contact him?”

Lee Child replied, “Yes, he would.” Reacher wasn’t going to say, “Come join my group of funny men,” but he was going to date her for a little while.

At the end of season 1, when I was thinking about which book we would adapt for season 2, I remember calling Malcolm from my backyard. I said to him, “Would you like to come down for just one episode, maybe just a few scenes? Is it worth it to you?’

Malcolm said, “Oh, I’m from the Reacher family. I’m here if you want. Everything you need.’ Malcolm has been in four or five things that I’ve written and produced, and he’s also one of the best actors in the world.

Reacher Season 2 is currently available on Prime Video.
