The Super Cup puts Sao Paulo’s favorable record at stake against Palmeiras

Tricolor has a big advantage in knockout duels against Verdão. However, for the first time the teams decide on a national final

Sao Paulo and Palmeiras will compete this Sunday (4/2), at 4pm, at the Mineirão, for the title of the Brazilian Super Cup in 2024. The Paulista tricolor arrives after winning the Brazilian Cup for the first time in its history. On the other hand, Verdão lifted the Brasileirão for the 12th time and is also the current champion of the competition.

However, when it comes to knockout matches at Choque-Rei, there is a certain advantage on the tricolor side. After all, in the 21 knockout matches already played in the history of the match, the Morumbi club has prevailed on 16 occasions compared to only five for Verdão.

Since 2019 the clubs have met often and had good clashes. In the last three years there have been six qualifying matches, with four classifications for Sao Paulo and two for Palmeiras.

San Paolo won: Paulista final (1992 and 2021), Paulista semi-final (1977 – first round, 79, 87, 98 and 2019), Paulista Supercampeonato semi-final (2002), Rio-San Paolo semi-final (1998 and 2002), quarter-finals finals of the Copa do Brasil (2000 and 2023), round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil (2022) and round of 16 of the Libertadores (1994, 2005 and 2006).

Palmeiras has won the: Torneio Laudo Natel (1972), round of 16 of the Brazilian Championship (2000), semi-final of the Campeonato Paulista (2008), final of the Paulista (2022) and quarter-final of the Libertadores (2021).

The Super Cup will be the 1st national final between the teams

Historic opponents, coming from Palmeiras and Sao Paulo, will compete for a national title for the first time. So far there have been three decisions between the clubs, but all of them from Paulistão. Tricolore won in 1992 and 2021, while Alviverde won in 2022.

Despite history favoring the Tricolore, Palmeiras has a better recent record. After all, in the last ten matches, Palmeiras has won five, including 5-0 in the 2023 Brazilian Championship.
