The franchise already has two films released and three more on the way to theaters, but the filmmaker revealed that he already has ideas to continue the success story
James Cameronit may have even taken 15 years to release the sequel Avatar(2009), to date the highest-grossing film in the history of cinema, but the next films are in full swing and, in fact, the filmmaker already has ideas to expand the franchise beyond the planned pentalogy.
In an interview with the magazine People during the 51st edition of the Saturn Awards, held in Los Angeles, United States, last Sunday (4), Cameron stated that he has already written the scripts for the next films, but that he has ideas for a sixth and seventh Avatar film, despite not believing that he will be responsible for bringing them to the big screen:
“We’ve already written the fifth film, and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh [capĂtulos]although I would probably pass the baton at that point”he declared. “Mortality starts to catch up with you. But we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We love it. We get to work with great people.”
In the conversation, the director also said that he hopes to put Avatar on the same level as franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars: “Franchises with built worlds, which have existed since I was a child, are my inspirations”he stated.
“We’re still a young universe. We only have two movies left, we’re on our way to the third now. To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you have to pour all your heart and energy into it.”completed Cameron.
Currently, the filmmaker is simultaneously working on the post-production of Avatar 3which is scheduled to debut in theaters in 2025, and in the filming of Avatar 4which should debut in 2029. The pentalogy should end in 2031 with the release of Avatar 5.
