On Monday the 5th the Federal Court formed the majority condemn another 29 defendants for the anti-democratic acts of January 8 last year. At the moment it has not yet been decided what the sentence for each will be. The process could end this Monday, if no minister asks for an opinion. The information is from the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo.
Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the trial, voted for the application of sentences of between 14 and 17 years. Gilmar Mendes, Dias Toffoli and Cármen Lúcia accompanied him.
Cristiano Zani also voted for the conviction, but asked for sentences of between 11 and 14 years, and was accompanied by minister Edson Fachin. With these votes the majority for conviction was formed.
In the end, these 29 convicts are added to 30 others who have already seen their trial concluded by the STF in relation to the events of January 8th. Their sentences ranged from three to 17 years in prison, for crimes of:
- Violent abolition of the democratic rule of law;
- Coup d’etat;
- Armed criminal conspiracy;
- Qualified damage e
- degradation of the protected heritage.
In total, 1,354 people face criminal charges at the STF for their involvement in January 8.
