Boston Dynamics’ “bricklayer robot” gets hands to do delicate tasks

The Atlas model is a humanoid robot and only has the option of claws to hold objects

OR Atlasthe company’s humanoid robot Boston dynamicshas taken new “hands” in its most recent version, presented on Tuesday 6th in a video released on Youtube. Now, the “masonry robot” has fingers and joints, which allow for greater precision in holding smaller objects.

In the previous version presented by Boston Dynamics, the Atlas had a claw at the end of the robotic arm, which allowed it to pick up certain objectsbut with little control over the force applied to the task: in one of the videos, for example, Atlas pinches a wooden board, but ends up damaging the material.

Now, instead of the claw, the robot has gained a kind of hand with three extremities and three joints that form the joint, simulating the movements of a human hand, with the difference that Atlas’ “fingers” can rotate 360 degrees. With that, the company reported that the Atlas update prepares it for “real work, combining strength, perception and mobility.”

In the presentation video, the robot takes a car part, weighing approximately 13.6 kilos, from a niche with its hands and places it on a shelf. During the task, which consists of identifying how to take the piece and subsequently deciding where to insert it, Atlas seems to carry out the task more delicately than the previous version.

This ability is considered by experts to be an advance in the construction of the robot, because changing the way it holds objects also involves changing the centers of gravity and force, so that when you pick up a piece or a tool, for example, Atlas does not fall to the ground either backwards or forwards.

The Atlas is a humanoid model launched by the company in 2013. In the last ten years, however, the equipment has undergone more sophisticated updates until reaching a bipedal version with more joints and diversified axes. For now all tests with the new model have been carried out at the Boston Dynamics factory and there is not yet a date for its marketing.
