The parish priest of the parish of São Domingos, in the city of Osasco (SP), posted on his Instagram story that he was incommunicado for “obvious reasons”. Father José Eduardo is one of the targets of Operation Tempus Veritatis, which investigates an attempted coup and abolition of the democratic rule of law by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his political allies. The priest was identified by the PF as one of the members who will participate in a meeting on November 19, 2022 at the Palácio do Planalto, where they discussed a coup plan to prevent Lula (PT) from taking office.
In the decision authorizing the operation, Minister Alexandre de Moraes underlined that José Eduardo de Oliveira e Silva will be a member of the project’s legal core, who will act “by advising and drafting decrees with legal and doctrinal bases that satisfy the interests of the coup group under investigation”.
Also on the social network, the priest specified that, with respect to the investigation, his position on the matter is “clear” and “unequivocal”, and said he was at the disposal of Brazilian justice. “The Republic is secular and governed by constitutional precepts, which must be respected. Breaking with the established order would be profoundly contrary to my principles. Below God, in our country, there is the federal Constitution. For this reason I have not collaborated or supported any disintegrating act of the Constitution. As a professor of moral theology, I have always taught that positive law must be obeyed by the faithful, among whom I humbly include myself”, he writes in a note.
