The Hulu platform canceled “Woke”, a comedy series that had two seasons starring Lamorne Morris, the Winston of “New Girl”. The attraction was based on the life and art of cartoonist Keith Knight (creator of the comic “The K Chronicles”) and tackled an absolutely topical topic: structural racism.
Created by the artist himself in collaboration with Marshall Todd (writer of “A Gang of Noise”), the series starred Morris as Keef, an illustrator and cartoonist living in San Francisco.
Successfully, the protagonist has a rosy vision of the world, until he feels the racism of the police in his own skin. From that moment he begins to hallucinate and be criticized by his own characters – who come to life wherever he goes – all to force him to reconsider his worldview and his own art.
The cast also included comedian T. Murph, former “Saturday Night Live” member Sasheer Zamata and actor Blake Anderson (of “Workaholics”).
Unprecedented in Brazil, the series has won some awards from organizations related to African American culture and its latest episode aired in April of this year.
