With the arrival of the reinforcements, the Tricolore has nine midfielders in its squad
Fluminense’s board of directors has so far announced seven signings for the 2024 season, three of them midfielders. Renato Augusto, David Terans and Gabriel Pires join a midfield that includes André, Martinelli, Alexsander, Ganso, Jhon Arias and Lima, giving coach Fernando Diniz even more options and tactical variations.
The first to debut was Gabriel Pires. Coming from Botafogo, the player made his debut with Influenza as a starter in the 3-0 victory against Nova Iguaçu, in the Campeonato Carioca. Despite him not being in the best physical condition, he managed to deliver a solid performance, remaining on the pitch for 78 minutes, and contributing to the goal that opened the scoring of the match.
This was Gabriel’s only game of the season, so far, as he was nursing a muscle injury. Fluminense wants to count on the athlete for the decision of the Recopa Sul-Americana, against LDU.
In the same match, but from the bench, Renato Augusto made his debut. He also entered the field in the matches against Bangu and Sampaio Corrêa-RJ (in the latter he contributed with a shot that led to the winning goal), helping to create plays with great precision in passing.
Renato Augusto (36 years old) with the team shirt @FluminenseFC:
3 games (0 starters)
6 contributions (!)
6 decisive steps (!)
Long passing accuracy 83% (5/6!)
Passing accuracy of 92% (98/107!)
8 balls recovered
3 disarm
SofaScore rating 7.13

The Uruguayan David Terans played his first match with the tricolor shirt in the second half of the 4-1 triumph against Bangu, where he almost “stole” a goal from Arias and in the 2-2 draw against Boavista in which, despite stumbled, he made four decisive passes in the match.

The tendency is for Diniz to maintain the “basic formation” that was continental champion in 2023. However, in a possible scenario of absences (call-ups, injuries, suspensions…) reinforcements come into play. In fact, one of the variations used by Diniz was to bring André back to the role of defender and Renato Augusto to midfield, showing the possibilities that exist to vary the way of playing when you have a more reinforced squad.
In 2024, Fluminense will again play the three main competitions of Brazilian football: Libertadores (classified as reigning champions), Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil, in a calendar that will not have breaks during the Copa América (played between 20 June and 14 July).
