After 10 years of silence, the director of the Matrix returns to the cinema!

10 years ago, Lily Wachowski made Jupiter: The Fate of the Universe with her sister Lana. Since then, the filmmaker has not touched the camera for the big screen, focusing exclusively on the Sense8 series. In 2021, he declined to co-direct Matrix Resurrections.

“Lana had this idea for another Matrix and we talked about it. We started discussing it in light of the deaths of our parents, first my father, then my mother, who died within five weeks of each other.

“I just made my transition and I was completely exhausted because we shot Cloud Atlas, Jupiter and the first season of Sense8 back-to-back. We were distributing one while we were preparing for the other. We’re talking about it. It’s over 100 days each time.”added Lilly in an August 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Keep in mind that the Matrix franchise was a huge success, grossing $1.8 billion worldwide in 4 episodes. In total, the license gathered 15 million viewers in France. Unfortunately, Resurrections was a dismal failure (159 million internationally) and buried the franchise.

A 180 degree turn to comedy

Today, Lily Wachowski seems to be back on track! According to ColliderHe will soon be back on set to direct Trash Mountain.

This will be his first solo film. The main role in this feature film is to be played by American comedian Caleb Heron, whose script he wrote with Ruby Custer.

The story tells about a 20-year-old gay man from Chicago. The latter must return to his native Missouri after the death of his father, a man who loved to accumulate all kinds of things in the house.

The story is described as “fun, warm and moving”. For Lily Wachowski, comedy is new territory to conquer after shining in SF between the Matrix saga and Sense8. He has already entered the comedy genre by directing episodes of Work in Progress.

“When my friend Caleb Heron sent me the script for Garbage Mountain, I jumped at the chance to direct it. It’s so beautiful and sad and funny! Queer representation and stories are vital right now because we’re increasingly marginalized. Our incredible authors, Caleb and Ruby, There are bright lights in all this darkness.”said Lily Wachowski.
