$1 billion worldwide: This wildly popular animated film is a hit on Netflix

Perhaps the Despicable Me 4 trailer released two weeks ago made fans of the saga eager to dive into the previous adventures of Gru and his yellow compatriots.

Still, Despicable Me 3 is Netflix’s most-watched feature film this week, while the weekly top 10 also includes the first two installments of the popular animated franchise, as well as the Minions spin-off.

What is it about?

In Despicable Me 3, directed by Eric Guyon, Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda in 2017, the supervillain Gru makes the most surprising discovery: he has a twin brother named Drew who looks just like him. When he goes to meet her on his island of Freedonia, a bitter rivalry quickly arises between the two brothers, who nevertheless learn to ally against a new enemy: the wonderful and funny Balthazar Braat.

The main antagonist of this third installment, voiced by David Marcais in the original version (and Trey Parker, one of the two creators of South Park, in the original version), this vintage-looking villain, fighting 80s hits, definitely represents. Doubt about the film’s main comedic asset.

A commercial triumph

A true box office triumph when it hit theaters 7 years ago, Despicable Me 3 collected over a billion dollars in greenbacks worldwide. A score that makes it the highest-grossing film in the saga, aside from the first spin-off centered on Minions (which grossed $1.159 billion).

Will the fourth installment, expected in our theaters on July 3, be even better?
