Those who passed near the Salgado Filho airport, in Porto Alegre (RS), witnessed an impressive scene: the Varig Museum and its iconic Douglas DC-3, both abandoned since the company’s activities ceased in 2005. This reality, however, is transformed, at least in part.
Inspired and guided by enthusiasts and former Varig employees, the “Instituto Museu Varig” undertook the task of revitalizing the emblematic aircraft, which had remained unattended since 2005. The work included the meticulous restoration of the original paintwork, with the distinctive signs of ‘agency. and the rehabilitation of the interior, now featuring a fully restored passenger cabin. This impressive renovation is now available for viewing.
The legendary DC-3, identified as “PT-ANU”, is on display at the Shopping Boulevard Laçador, in Porto Alegre, as part of the “Varig Experience” project. Visitors are greeted by attendants dressed in uniforms that reflect the classic designs worn by Varig flight attendants, offering an even more authentic immersion in the history of Brazilian aviation.
On weekends, interested parties have the opportunity to explore the interior of the plane. The exhibition will remain open until the end of August, offering a unique opportunity to experience the history of commercial aviation. Entry is free and more details can be found on the project website.
