Christopher Nolan confesses he ‘would love to do a horror film’

The director also stated that “‘Oppenheimer’ has horror elements”

Christopher Nolan is interested in working with horror films. The director spoke about the subject when answering a question from a fan who participated in an event at London’s British Film Institute last Thursday, the 15th:

Oppenheimer It has horror elements, for sure, as I think is appropriate for the theme. I think horror films are very interesting because they rely on very specific cinematic devices, they’re really about a visceral response to things, so at some point I would love to make a horror film. However, I think a really good horror film requires an exceptional idea. And those are rare. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that yet.

“But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic perspective. It’s also one of the few genres where studios produce a lot of these films, and they’re films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood generally is. very resistant to including in films, but it is a genre where this is allowed”, he added.

Nolan delved deeper into the issue of cinema genre by exemplifying that Oppenheimer is a heist movie from the middle onwards, but a courtroom drama in the third act: “The reason I chose these two genres for these sections is that they are popular genres in which dialogue, conversations between people, are inherently intense and interesting for the audience. That’s what makes working with genres fun: you can explore different areas, whereas in a different kind of film you wouldn’t really be allowed to.”
