Gal Costa’s legacy: son sues widow

Gabriel Costa, son of the singer Gal Costa, has asked for justice to guarantee his right to the inheritance of his mother, who died in November 2022. The conflict is against Wilma Petrillo, the artist’s widow, who asks for the recognition of a stable union with Gal to also claim part of the heritage. Gabriel, who recently turned 18, claims that Wilma acted as the singer’s manager and godmother, and therefore had no inheritance rights.

Causes and declarations

In January 2023, Wilma Petrillo asked in court for recognition as Gal’s wife, citing a 24-year relationship and requesting the role of inventor of the assets, as well as permanent custody of Gabriel. However, Gabriel’s majority approach stopped the process. The Court of São Paulo, in July 2023, summoned Gabriel, then 17 years old, for clarification on the alleged stable union of his mother and Wilma, when the young man, represented by the Public Defense Office, took a position against the confirmation of the unit.

Documentation and new developments

Gabriel’s defense claims that Wilma Petrillo did not present sufficient evidence to prove the alleged stable union with Gal Costa. The widow’s lawyers, in turn, insist on family harmony between Wilma and Gabriel, treating each other like mother and son. The Court, under the circumstances, asked Gabriel to make a new official statement after reaching the age of majority, with handwritten and notarized confirmation, about his mother’s relationship with the businesswoman.

Controversies and public reactions

Gal Costa died in November 2022, aged 77. Her death triggered a series of public reactions against Wilma Petrillo, especially after the decision to bury the singer in a place different from the one she had chosen in life. Allegations of bullying and cheating also emerged during the time Wilma worked as Gal’s manager, increasing scrutiny of her claims.
