Friends star was not listed in the In Memoriam segment of the British awards ceremony, which took place this Sunday (18)
Fans of Matthew Perry revolted on Sunday night (18), after noticing the actor’s absence in the segment In Memoriam of BAFTA. The award, the main one in British cinema and one of the biggest in world cinema, is given by British Film Academywho talked about including the star of Friendswho died in October 2023, among those honored on the night.
In all, it was four minutes of an emotional tribute, accompanied by a live performance by “Time After Time”in Cyndi Lauperplayed by Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso). In the segment, portraits of important personalities that cinema lost in the last year were shown, including names such as Tina Turner it’s from Michael Gambon – but not Perry’s.
Still on Sunday night, Matthew Perry fans used social media to express their disappointment with the ceremony for leaving the actor out of the tribute (via TMZ). Some even recalled that, in addition to his best-known role, as Chandler Bing in the sitcom FriendsPerry also had a successful film career.

The negative repercussion ended up reaching BAFTA executives, who spoke out via X and the Variety. In a statement, they stated that the actor should be remembered at the British Academy ceremony that awards TV highlights.
Death of Matthew Perry
Matthew Perry died in 2023, aged 54, a victim of acute effects from the use of ketamine, used to treat depression. His body was found lifeless in a hot tub by his assistant. At autopsy, accidental drowning is listed as a secondary cause of death.
