The end of Christopher Nolan’s curse
After five personal failures, Christopher Nolan has finally been recognized by BAFTA. Better: His Oppenheimer emerges as the big winner of the 2024 edition, with seven titles for Best Picture and Best Director. But also Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.).
That bodes well for the Oscars, for which feature film remains a heavy favorite more than ever. With the main competitor, which can be called, not Killers of the Flower Moon, which left empty-handed despite nine nominations, but Poor Creatures.
Yorgos Lanthimos’s film is the second winner of the evening, with five awards, including Best Actress, which went to Emma Stone, absolutely phenomenal, and who seems to be eclipsing Lily Gladstone in the category.
On this side of the channel, attention was mainly focused on the anatomy of the fall. The latest winner of the Palme d’Or, Justin Trietti’s film continues to captivate the world, and the BAFTAs proved it even more as it walked away with one prize (out of a possible seven).
But not least because it’s the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay, proof that this Oscar, of which he was a big favorite, will reach him on March 10.
