In 1990, Tom Cruise was not yet at the top of Hollywood, but he was getting very close. After taking off in Top Gun’s jets, Tony Scott brings it back down to the tarmac for Days of Thunder, an action film set in the world of NASCAR racing.
Rebroadcasting this Monday, February 19 on TF1 Séries Films, the feature film has not achieved the cult status (or even sequel) of Top Gun. And it is still most famous today for having celebrated the birth of the couple Tom Cruise – Nicole Kidman.
At the time of his release, Tom Cruise was not the action star and unstoppable stuntman that he is today. But his CV already has a few good lines, and he’s been dubbed by adults at this stage: Paul Newman in The Color of Money, Robert Duvall here, Gene Hackman in The Firm…
Revisiting it today allows us to revisit this part of his career. And I wonder when he will return to cinema. Without much surprise, this will be the next installment in the Mission: Impossible saga, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026. And, as its lead actor, it doesn’t look like it’s going to end, despite the seventh episode. It didn’t perform as well as it had hoped at the global box office, in the midst of a summer of 2023 marked by Barbie and Oppenheimer supremacy.
But the eighth movie is still planned and it will be a direct sequel to the previous movie which can be seen on CANAL+ from January 12 and here is what we know about it.
Why the story in two parts?
In an ideal world where Covid didn’t shut down Hollywood for a few months before getting back on its toes, Mission Impossible 7 and 8 would have been shot back-to-back. Like Back to the Future and The Matrix sequels.
If Tom Cruise And Christopher McQuarrie had to revise his plans for the film, the initial ambition remains the same. And this was confirmed by the title of episode 7, which was revealed along with the first trailer: Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
Why do we fight like this? Why are we trying to cram all this into two hours? Let’s cut the story in half and make two films
“I knew I wanted to expand the cast and give each of these characters more to do, so I knew the film would be bigger and longer than throw down“– said the director and co-author Collider. “At one point I said to myself: ‘Why are we fighting like this? Why are we trying to squeeze it all into two hours? Let’s cut it in half and make two films.”
“That’s the reason I wanted to do a two-part movie. It’s not just because the story was bigger, but because we wanted more emotion in it.”
Release date: When is Mission Impossible 8 coming out? where can i see
Out on June 26, 2024 in France: The film is now set to release on May 21, 2025. Isn’t it surprising? At the world premiere of Rome 7, one of his bravura productions, Tom Cruise announced that the feature film was only 40% complete before a writers’ strike forced them to cancel it. “stop.
Christopher McQuarrie later added that the big action scenes were not part of the shoot. The writers’ strike was joined by the actors’ strike, which made the return to the set a bit far. Therefore, delaying the release was only a matter of time.
After filming didn’t resume in mid-October, it wasn’t just Ethan Hunt and his team’s mission that became impossible. One thing is certain: no matter the date, the film will be seen in cinemas, of which Tom Cruise is one of the ardent defenders. In the niche that brought fortune to Top Gun: Maverick, which became the star’s only billionaire opus at the box office in 2022.
Starring: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell… Who stars in Mission Impossible 8?
Warning – The segment below contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible 7. Please continue if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
Mission Impossible is unthinkable without Tom Cruise, the star will return as Ethan Hunt. For the eighth time in just thirty years. And a new handful of crazy stunts, including the one he teased on video.
Ving Rhames, the only actor other than himself to appear in every episode, is also back. As does Simon Pegg, a loyal accomplice after appearing in episode 3. And Rebecca Ferguson, Free Electron, performing as a quartet since Rogue Nation?
Ilsa, who died during the dead reckoning, could only be brought back to life by a flashback. And, in the absence of official casting, much uncertainty reigns over his presence, as with Pom Klementieff: Paris, the killer he plays, was still seen alive at the end of the July 12 release. But Simon Pegg suggested that he should still be relied upon.
Speaking of ghosts, Esai Morales will continue to torment Tom Cruise as the evil Gabriel. The agent duo played by Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis should still be around, as should Henry Cherny, aka the troubled Eugene Kittridge. And Ethan will once again be able to count on Grace, played by Hayley Atwell
When you see what your next mission has in store for you…
And let’s not forget Alana Mizopolis (Vanessa Kirby), who always has a place in the story. Marie (Mariela Garriga), previously seen in flashbacks and seen again to learn more about Ethan’s past. Or, to everyone’s surprise, William Donloe (Rolf Saxon).
Despite himself being involved in the robbery of the CIA headquarters in the heart of the first opus, thanks to vomit mixed with coffee, the character returns. Where in Alaska will Kittredge be taken tomorrow after this debacle? The photo posted by Christopher McQuarrie to announce the return speaks for itself.

like this shot in the snowBy Lucy Tulugarjuk, one of the new faces of this opus. Along with Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham (who will be on the aircraft carrier where Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie were filmed), Nick Offerman and Holt McCallan, who will play the Secretary of Defense.
Plot: What will Mission Impossible 8 be about?
It’s always a big mystery that surrounds each episode. Who knew the nature of the danger Tom Cruise would face in Fallout before watching the movie? Or that the star will be challenged by an artificial intelligence, symbolized by his film protection platforms and their algorithms, in Dead Reckoning?
The same goes for its sequels, especially since these films are rewritten during filming. But except for one detail: its status as the other half of the story. The audience isn’t starting from scratch, and now that the key issue has been resolved, the film must revolve around the search for what is revealed: the source code for the unit buried with the submarine.

Who is Gabriel really?
Thus, the plot can be tighter, even if the saga likes to take us to the four corners of the world. And, here, in the past. Ethan and Gabriel’s, the one to shine the light on. As is often the case, the action will focus more on the stunts than the script and we will have to wait for the release to have answers to the questions we are asking ourselves.
Are we really going to change the title and remove Dead Reckoning as the rumor accompanying the release delay suggests? Where did Luther go to hide so the creature wouldn’t notice? Is the submarine in Alaska? What’s behind Ethan’s past? Will he sacrifice himself for his friends, the last and logical stage of his journey in the form of the Stations of the Cross? Are we at the end of the saga?
Mission Impossible 9: Will there be a sequel?
For a long time, everything indicated that Mission Impossible 8 would be the last opus in the adventure of Ethan Hunt. And Christopher McQuarrie clearly hinted as much. But the director returned to the subject during the release of Dead Reckoning, claiming that he already had ideas for other films.
For his part, Tom Cruise says he wants to follow Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones model and make Mission Impossibles until he’s 80. Is bluff better to surprise us or a way to make it clear that retirement is impossible for the star?
