Should not culture benefit from a sovereign ministry?
I do not think it is particularly necessary. Culture is not really targeted by the state and the cultural wealth of our country is largely based on local traditions and products. In this regard, the local government has a huge role to play. Indeed, the centralized trend in Paris often operates only to the detriment of the culture in the rest of France.
For cinema, the state is already a major player in the industry. CNC, despite its shortcomings, is an excellent tool for the preservation and consolidation of French cinema. During my tenure we will speak openly with sector professionals to strengthen, adjust and develop the French film industry.
Our country has been on the defensive for decades, maybe it’s time to move on the attack? At least the example of the cultural policies of Japan and Korea is very interesting. France invented cinema and we are one of the only European countries that has maintained our film industry.
So we can think about cooperation with other European countries or the French-speaking world. This will be an opportunity to create a French counterbalance to 7th art for American domination. The Europe of Nations or the French-speaking Union I want to create would be a very good framework for a major film policy with global ambitions.
Is cinema necessarily a political art? What inspires your recovery that can be done around a work like “Bac Nord” lately?
Bac Nord is a popular action movie. It is, of course, a fictional film, but without offending opponents, it is also very realistic. The film is not only based on real history, but also fits in very well with the truth of these neighborhoods. I have lost the number of policemen, firefighters or residents who have been coming to me for 20 years and telling me about the hardships and sometimes the horrors they are experiencing.
Journalists or politicians who accuse us of hijacking a plane have never been to these areas, or worse, do not see the problem in the fact that control over the whole of our country is in the hands of criminals, traffickers or Islamist gangs.
Not looking up can be considered a critique of climate mitigation, but North Ferry Can not be interpreted as monitoring poor police safety and working conditions? It makes no sense. This is ostrich policy.
Do movies and TV series, among other things, have a call, in your opinion, to help “cross the lines” in social issues (parity, diversity, etc.)?
The political use of art is very old and cinema is clearly no exception to the rule. But is that the goal? I do not think so. It all depends on your definition of art. Is this a search for beauty? Disseminate values? Searching for emotion, positive or negative? This is a philosophical debate that has led to a lot of ink flow.
I know that some left-wing political circles have invaded culture too early and turned it into one of the political strongholds. This is the theory of the Marxist thinker Antonio Gramsci: in order to profoundly change society, it is necessary to seize cultural, academic, and artistic institutions in order to gradually spread revolutionary ideas.
Once the mind is drawn to new ideas, political change can be implemented smoothly. We see this today with the distillation of the so-called “awakened ideas”. In parallel with this political use of cinema, sometimes in the interests of the states themselves, we are witnessing a commodity of art. Popular movies from a few years ago sometimes tend to become a mass consumer product, without depth, losing quality. I regret both trends.
The long history of French cinema is highly political, but above all it must remain artistic and popular. Some films deny reality and allow the public to get acquainted with the essential issues, but we must be careful not to suppress ideology, or rather one ideology, in the artistic production of our country. What is happening across the Atlantic, or even in the UK, is very disturbing in this regard.
Candidate … and spectator
If we have to name a movie or TV series for this campaign …
Კ Good good and ugly. Guess which one is which.
If the title of a movie or TV series should be given to your program…
A more beautiful life!
A copy of a movie or series that inspires …
ᲠTulia. A copy of the auditorium probably. ᲨIt is possible “We are ruled by laskaras, who fix the price of beets and can not bring radish”.
Movie / Series Character to Inspire…
Joan D. Arc, as always.
For which the President·E would you vote for the screen?
Of course Jean Gabin is president.
The best political film?
This is a very good question. A priori I would say Argo or Le Guepard.
The best political TV series?
Baron Noir without hesitation. I can cite House of Cards or Veep, which seems like a very good series, but Baron Noir is undoubtedly a very good French success. There is a certain rhythm that accompanies our creativity, a mastery of dialogue, and then this is France, quite simply, we recognize it well despite some caricature elements.
Remembering your first viewer?
I remember Tarzan well! 1968 version.
Your cult movie?
brave Heart. This is a wonderful film with very beautiful values of patriotism and freedom. For French cinema, Father Christmas is clearly rubbish.
Your cult TV series?
I loved Game of Thrones. This is a powerful series, full of twists and turns. Despite the disappointing ending, his success was well deserved.
Your latest movie / TV series?
North Ferry. I was amazed by the realism of this film. This is very much in line with the reality described by the police and the residents of these neighborhoods, which I have been experiencing for almost 20 years.
Working or thinking about music for a movie / series?
I would say professional.
