‘Io Capitano’ tells the story of Mediterranean migrants
The Italian feature film “Io, Capitano”, nominated for an Oscar as best international film in 2024, will premiere in Brazilian cinemas on February 29.
Written by Matteo Garrone, the production won the Silver Lion for best director at the last Venice Film Festival and tells the story of the brothers Seydou (Seydou Sarr) and Moussa (Moustapha Fall), who embark on an epic adventure to leave Dakar, Senegal, towards Europe. .
The theme portrays the long-running migration crisis in the central Mediterranean Sea, a route that brings internationally displaced people from Africa to the south of the European Union, particularly to Italy, which welcomed 158,000 forced migrants by sea in 2023 alone.
“‘I, Captain’ is the result of the interweaving of several stories of young people who experienced the crossing from Africa to Europe. Listening to their testimonies, it became clear that their stories were probably the only possible epic narratives of our times,” says Garrone in a statement released by Pandora Filmes, the film’s distributor in Brazil.
According to him, the aim of the work is to tell the epic of the Mediterranean from the point of view of the migrants themselves. “For a long time I doubted my legitimacy in telling this story, but it is their story that I am telling,” the director emphasizes.
In addition to the Silver Lion for Garrone, Seydou Sarr won the Marcello Mastroianni Award, awarded by the Venice Film Festival to emerging actors, in the latest edition of the show. .
