What are you doing?

The nations of water, earth, fire, and air once lived in harmony, and the Avatar, master of the four elements, guaranteed peace among them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and destroyed the Air Nomads in their first maneuver to conquer the world. As the current incarnation of the Avatar slowly emerges, the world loses hope.

However, hope is born again like a light in the night when Aang, a young air nomad – and the last representative of his people – emerges from the slumber to claim his rightful place as the new Avatar. Along with his new friends Sokka and Katara, siblings who are members of the South Pole Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a quest that combines fantasy and action.

In order to find the perfect interpreters of the characters of the series, the production turned to young actors little known to the general public. This is especially true of Gordon Cormier, only fourteen years old. The Canadian actor (of Filipino descent) has previously starred in The Stand and Lost in Space, but Avatar marks his first starring role.

Despite his young age and relative inexperience, the latter gives an absolutely fantastic performance as Aang, the protagonist of the series. Juggling the character’s light-hearted side but also his dark side perfectly, Gordon Cormier delivers on his action scenes perfectly.

Alongside him, Sokka is played by Ian Ausley, a 21-year-old American actor who notably appeared in several episodes of 13 Reasons Why Season 3. Her younger sister Katara is played by Chiaventio Tarbell, who Netflix subscribers have already seen in the series Anne with E.

However, the cast of four main characters wouldn’t be complete without the interpreter of Zuko, the young prince of the Fire Nation. The latter is played by Dallas Liu in the Netflix series; The 22-year-old American actor, a fan of martial arts, which he has been doing since a young age, has particularly stood out in the casting of the Marvel film Shang-Chi and The Legend of Ten Rings.

Finally, some other famous actors will also appear in the series. This is especially true of Paul Soon-Hyun Lee, well known to fans of The Mandalorian as the venerable Iroh, Zuko’s uncle. Daniel Dae Kim stars as Ozai, the Lord of the Fire Nation, reuniting with his Lost co-star Ken Leung (General Zhao).

Is it worth checking out?

No one has forgotten M. Night Shyamalan’s first adaptation. The 2010 feature film The Last Airbender, which adapted the Avatar cartoon into live action, was a dismal failure. To the point where the film is still considered the worst film by an American filmmaker with an audience rating of barely 2.1 out of 5 stars on AlloCiné.

So it’s with good reason that fans of the original series cautiously greeted the announcement of Netflix’s proposed live-action adaptation project. The departure of Avatar’s creators over artistic differences didn’t go down well, but the reveal of the first images of the series still appeased a certain number of Internet users.

After One Piece, a new successful live action?

So how much is this new adaptation of The Last Airbender worth? After One Piece, has Netflix been able to offer a successful live-action version of the beloved cartoon to the public?

Not only did Netflix manage to honor the avatar of the original series, but the platform was able to find an original production that would be its standard bearer for years to come.

Because let’s face it: we just love Avatar. The success of the series is mainly due to the quality of its casting. Like One Piece, Netflix has managed to find the perfect actors for each of the main roles in the show.

Just as it wouldn’t have been possible to succeed in the One Piece series without an actor to play Luffy, the platform wasn’t wrong when casting young actor Gordon Cormier as Aang. The latter performs at the highest level only at the age of fourteen and proves that talent has nothing to do with age and experience.

Stunning special effects!

Another quality of this live action lies in the quality of its special effects. While One Piece’s VFX was only half-convincing (perhaps the fault of the story, which takes place mostly on the high seas?), Avatar does a great job of action and offers some great stunning performance sequences.

The power of all four elements is felt every time the powers are used and the fights leave an impression on us. In terms of special effects, few series in the past have risen to such a level. This impressive spectacle of sound and light is the very definition of what we now call common parlance Banger.

This series has all the elements that make a series successful: fast pace, high-quality special effects, an interesting plot taking place in a rich world, and finally attractive characters. The recipe from the cartoon is brilliantly reproduced here and there is no doubt that this live-action avatar will convince fans of the original series as well as the general public who are still unfamiliar with the franchise.
