There was too much to handle.
A below, spoilers for episode 6 of the third season of ‘The Boys’
We can say that ‘Herogasm’ has been a long time coming. So to speak. In fact, ‘TheBoys’whose third season in Spain is currently broadcast by Amazon Prime Video, has been announcing this legendary comic moment for almost as long as the series has been on the air. Thus, in the run-up to Season 3, the anticipation for that sweet, sweet Herogasm climax built to almost unbearable levels.
In January, Jack Quaid told ‘The Wrap’ that this new season is “messier” than ever, and Jensen Ackles has since shared horror stories about a “troubled” camera operator who saw some disturbing things That day on the set of the Herogasm.
But now that ‘Herogasm’ has finally made its way into our lives, and there are a few reasons why ‘Herogasm’ is the best episode of ‘The Boys,’ one wonders if it’s as disturbing and controversial as fans expected. Okay, yes the floating dildos, the flaming dicks and the lightning nipples are not enough to unsettle or excite, how about octopus powder, explosive semen and burnt remains of Love Sausage?
It’s a lot to process, that’s for sure. But yes ‘TheBoys’one of the best series of superheroes in history, would have been more faithful to the source materialthen we might have ended up with something even more shocking than all of that combined.
Herogasm is still an orgy of superpowers in the comicsbut there, the heroes get dirty at a secret tropical resort sponsored by Vought. However, the essence of all this is the same. And, in both versions, sex workers are still paid a fortune to take part in horrible, even deadly, orgies that are heightened by the involvement of superpowers.
Many disturbing moments made it to the screen, but two incidents were missed particularly disturbing: the first is when Black Noir sexually assaults Hughie with his thumb. And if you read between the lines, it is implied that more things happened between them as well.
However, this would not have worked in the series, as Hughie’s story in this episode is tied to Starlight at this point, and he also had to be involved in fighting The Patriot. Also, a similar story arc has already developed between Deep and Starlight, so ‘The Boys’ would have needed a very good reason to repeat those story steps.
But, what about that moment in the comics where Soldier Boy has sex with The Patriot? Yes, if the series had been more faithful to the comics, we could have seen Antony Starr and Jensen Ackles share more than just blows. But sadly, it wasn’t meant to be.
In the comics, The Patriot asks Soldier Boy to audition because he knows how excited Soldier Boy is to join The Seven. Taking advantage of his innocent nature, The Patriot acts as if it were some kind of audition.
Except there’s nothing good about it, because it’s all pretty creepy. The Patriot has no intention of letting Soldier Boy join the Seven, so just is being used for sexual purposes in a very cruel and contemptuous way.
Ahead of the explosive debut of ‘Herogasm,’ showrunner Eric Kripke revealed to ew that there was talk of including a version of this scene, but “it conflicted with a lot of the other things we were trying to build with Soldier Boy.”
It’s easy to see why ‘The Boys’ team was quick to jump to that conclusion. Because in the series, Soldier Boy poses a real threat to The Patriot. He is not someone who can be intimidated or coerced into doing something for someone else’s approval. That just wouldn’t make sense.
It’s worth noting as well that this reimagined version of Soldier Boy is extremely conservative, so even if he did have feelings for other men, he’d bury them even deeper than Termite got into that guy’s dick. And that is very deep.
The Patriot has also made it clear that he has an aversion to everything queer, as evidenced by his vile attitude towards Queen Maeve’s bisexuality. And if he were asked about all those dirty doppelganger shenanigans in season two, The Patriot would probably compare it to masturbation, since he’s essentially doing it to himself.
So, for all those reasons and more, Soldier Boy and The Patriot don’t end up going head-to-head on ‘Herogasm’. Instead, the physical contact between the couple remains only of a homoerotic naturemore than gay. Yeah, even when Butcher and Hughie swoop in too.
And in a way, that might be for the best, because it turns out the makeup department ran out of sperm on the set of the sixth episodeAt least that’s what Karl Urban claimed.
One would think they would have stored more knowing… how long the Herogasm was.
