Game of Thrones, which ran from 2011 to 2019, caused a turning point in television. Rated 4.6 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers, this series is often considered one of the best TV dramas of the 2010s.
After its discontinuation, this adaptation of George RR Martin’s literary series by David Benioff and DB Weiss left a huge void in the world of TV series. A lot of fiction has tried to up the ante, with more or less success, even if critics say The Last Shogun is a “new Game of Thrones.”
German Game of Thrones?
But a new successor may well enter the scene, and it comes to us from Germany. This epic fantasy drama is also an adaptation of the cult fantasy novel of the same name Hagen von Tronier By Wolfgang Holbein.
Although little known in France, this German author of fantasy and science fiction is a star in Germany, where his popularity is close to that of Stephen King. his novel Hagen von Tronier is a reimagining of the medieval folk saga of the Nibelungen.
And this epic is considered one of the biggest inspirations for modern fantasy franchises such as Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, but also… Game of Thrones !
What is Hagen talking about?
The German-Czech series Hagen is about the eponymous Lord Commander, who secretly harbors a deep love for Monarch Gunter’s daughter, Princess Kriemhild. When the Huns threaten to invade and the legendary dragon slayer, Siegfried, arrives, the king decides to marry a new wife, a Valkyrie queen named Brünnhilde, and helps Siegfried and Hagen.
Directed by Kirill Bos and Philipp Stenert, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Doron Wysocki, Hagen is billed as an epic drama series that combines “love, power, family and war, delivered with impressive cinematic quality.”
Series headliners include Gijs Naber (My Wife’s Story), Janis Nievoner (Munich), Jordis Triebel (Dark), Lila van der Zwag, Rosalinde Münster, Dominik Markus and Jörg Hartmann (Weissense Saga).
Deadline Offers the first overview of this German-Czech fiction that now has Fremantle as its worldwide distributor. Even if the Hagen series does not yet have a broadcaster in France, with this acquisition we can hope that it will arrive in France soon.
