The event movie of the year, Dune: Part II is on track to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2024. Denis Villeneuve’s film is already breaking records as it has the best start of the year at the US box office.
The film adaptation of the SF epic imagined by Frank Herbert is taking the world by storm, and this second installment looks set to win over even more fans who have already responded to the first film coming out in 2021.
What is Dune: Part II about?
After the first exhibition film, which established the foundation of his universe, the second feature film, more spectacular and dark, follows the fate of its protagonist Paul Atreides (Timothe Chalamet), who joined the Fremen.
This alliance, which brings him closer to Chani (Zendaya), allows him to lead a rebellion against those who destroyed his family. Haunted by dark premonitions, he finds himself faced with the greatest dilemma of all: choosing between the love of his life and the fate of the world.

Dune 2, already a classic for AlloCiné viewers
Although it’s only been in theaters for a week, Dune: Part II is already a huge critical and public success. Rated 4.2 out of 5 by the press and 4.5 out of 5 by members of the AlloCiné community, this second installment has already ascended the pantheon of the greatest films of all time.
Indeed, according to the AlloCiné database, Dune: Part II is currently ranked #6 among the greatest films of all time by AlloCiné viewers. Based on at least 2,000 ratings at the time of writing, Denis Villeneuve’s feature film is about stars along with cult films.
Forrest Gump still sits proudly in first place with 4,596 points out of 5. It is followed by Schindler’s List (4,591), The Green Line (4,577), 12 Angry Men (4,563), The Godfather (4,544) and finally. Dune: Part Twowhich currently peaks at 4,537, ahead of The Escapees or The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Obviously, this is just the beginning for Dune: Part II, and we’ll have to wait in the long run to see if the film maintains this position, with new audience ratings added to the themed weeks, months and years.
As of now, Dune: Part II has 5,440 ratings, which is lower than Forrest Gump (128,504 ratings) or The Godfather (60,685 ratings). But this first foray into the top of the greatest movies of all time is already an indication of Dune: Part II’s popularity and central place in cinema and in the hearts of moviegoers.
