When filmmaker Jeremiah Zagar was called up to the big leagues to direct Adam Sandler at Netflix. bumpHe formed a lead partner from his latest film to make the leap with him.
Noel Gentile, a former drama teacher at public schools in Brooklyn and New York, worked for months with actors Juancho Hernangome, Anthony Edwards, Kenny Smith, Boban Marianovich and the legendary Dr. Julius “Dr. J” Erving to demonstrate his skills on and off the court. The film portrays Sandler as Stanley Sugarman, a basketball scout for the Philadelphia 76ers. After discovering a unique player with a difficult past (Hernangomes), Sugarman brings the phenomenon to the United States, where, by chance, they have one last blow to prove they have what it takes for the NBA.
Gentile took the hit after making his acting coach debut in his critically acclaimed 2018 indie. we are animals. At the time, he was working with Youth FX, a film organization for young black men, and a friend put him in touch with Zagar, who was looking for someone to help with casting. Initially not caring about the pregnancy due to her full plate, she taught and directed the show. Zagar went to Gentile School for a recon mission and remained involved to help coach some of his students’ performances.
Zagar, delighted to see her, offered the show as an acting coach. we are animals, a film that first played three lead roles as Young Brothers. The film was praised by critics for its authenticity and won numerous nominations and special awards, including the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award for Zagar.

Zagar, again Investigator: “When Adam [Sandler] Telling me they wanted to work with real basketball players, I decided we needed to bring in someone to reveal what was in them. That’s how we brought Noel. There’s a scene between Juancho and Adam, while Juancho is shaking and crying in the car, it was amazing. He settled in this space and it was Noel who helped him get there.”
Gentile says he describes the process as a specific performance with a combination of methods including screenwriting, world building, improvisation, guided meditation, scene and story study, and more. “NBA players are incredibly disciplined about what they do,” he explained. “It’s the same thing we all respond to to have a space where we feel welcome, respected and loved, and a space where we can be vulnerable and learn. This is common to all the spaces I’ve worked with and all the different artists I’ve worked with. You pay enough attention to someone to see what their spark is and then you just create a space for them to come in and be authentic.
In the end, Dr. J called him a “coach” and had to say goodbye to Hernangomes and Edwards in tears. “I don’t think people become vulnerable if there isn’t a comfort level and I don’t think you can create art without love. The biggest thing for me is that there was so much joy, so much dazzling spirit and love in this movie,” he explained, although now it’s surreal to say he has friends who play in the NBA.
“I grew up watching basketball with my dad. The level of respect they gave me was very humbling. “I feel like I’ve broken that friendship, it’s going to last a long time,” he said, adding that he had previously flown to Minnesota to see Edwards play for the Timberwolves and see Hernangomes in action for the Utah Jazz. Now they are my friends.
Recently, he’s done a little more. There may be another project on the horizon for Sandler Happy Madison, and Gentil also wants to shoot a short film from a script he just finished.
Meanwhile, he enjoys trying out a new career following the art he is made of. “I love being on set and working with actors,” explains Gentil, a fan of his. shiite creek (“It made me a pandemic”) and similar films drive my car. “Sometimes life just happens and something comes along and you move on. I went from high school to teaching on a huge movie set. He was a complete replacement for the game.”
