William Gibson’s 1984 novel, Neuromancertook the science fiction world by storm, later influencing works such as The Matrix and Manga A ghost in a shell. And it’s AppleTV+ that will stick with it! The streaming platform has indeed announced that the series is being created by Graham Rowland (Jack Ryan) and directed by JD Dillard (Devotion). The show consists of ten episodes.
The novel is set in the future, with Henry Case, a cyberspace “cowboy”, a hacker traveling through the Matrix. Once the best, he has lost his ability to connect with the matrix: all is lost for him. Hired for one last job, he then connects with a powerful artificial intelligence…
Many failed attempts at cinema
Neuromancer is the first science fiction novel William Gibson and is generally considered the founding novel of the cyberpunk movement. It notably won the Nebula Prize for Best Novel in 1984 and spawned two sequels. count to zero (1986) and Mona Lisa is having fun (1988).
And of course, over the years, cinema has tried to adapt this monster of literature, to no avail. Fans only had the right to references within pop culture matrix and Ghost In The Shell Therefore, but also in video games Computer game Deus Ex or in a novel modified carbon (which itself was turned into a TV series).
- Ghost In The Shell will return to Netflix as a series
The author himself once named videographer and special effects expert Chris Cunningham as the only person he trusted to adapt his work. The latter, who directed music videos for Madonna and Björk, notably worked on special effects for several iconic films, including Alien 3, Alien, Resurrection and AI Artificial Intelligence. The project was launched, but remained in “development hell” for years – as were many subsequent attempts. The director of Cuba (1997), Vincenzo Natali, came close to achieving this several times. Stars such as Mark Wahlberg and Liam Neeson were involved in the project, but funding did not follow.
Recently, a film adaptation from Deadpool director Tim Miller had a better chance, but was not mentioned after Disney bought the studio Fox. The path was already clear for Apple, and a series might actually be a better idea, better suited to telling this complicated story in a few episodes.
While you wait to discover what it brings, dive into the world of The Matrix, whose original trilogy is currently streaming on Netflix.
