British police said Sunday that a man was arrested after a car crashed into the gates of Buckingham Palace in central London.
Grainy images circulating on social media showed a car outside the palace gates. British media reported that a witness heard “a loud bang”.
According to police, the accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday.
“Armed officers arrested a man who was at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage,” London police said in a statement. “He was taken to hospital where, following assessment, he was admitted in accordance with the Mental Health Act. The matter is not being treated as terrorism-related.”
Buckingham Palace said no members of the royal family were present at the time of the accident and that repairs to the gates were already underway.
