Other tracks from the duo’s catalog are more famous, but none sums up the story of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham as well as this classic that she recorded three times
There is a scene at the beginning of From Magic to Seductionin which the young woman Sally Owens (character from Sandra Bullockplayed in childhood by Camilla Belle) casts a spell on himself to ensure he will never fall in love. She collects herbs and white flower petals, places them all in a wooden bowl, and lifts it toward the night sky. As the ingredients magically rise and fly towards the full moon, “Crystal”, from Stevie Nickswith the hypnotic violin swirling through the darkness.
When From Magic to Seduction arrived in theaters in October 1998, “Crystal” was already 25 years old — and had lived more lives than most witches. The song was recorded three times: the first in 1973, by Nicks and her then boyfriend Lindsey Buckinghamon the joint album Buckingham Nicks; the second in 1975, with the Fleetwood Macafter the couple joined the band; and the third by Nicks alone, to the soundtrack of From Magic to Seduction. (Although Nicks have written “Crystal”, she didn’t sing it until the film — Buckingham sang lead vocals on the first two versions.)
But now it’s 2025. Why are we still talking about this song and its various versions, so many years later? Well, because we still have “crystal visions”. In September 2025, Buckingham Nicks was re-released after decades out of print, rekindling appreciation for that album that, essentially, opened the doors of Fleetwood Mac — and for the delicate, yet incredibly powerful ballad it contains. “Crystal” is not a global, viral hit Nicks like “Dreams”, but it is the golden thread that stitches the entire story of Steve and lindseywith each recording representing a different phase of the relationship between the two. This story is full of ups and downs, but “Crystal” has always been there. Crystalline knowledge is profound.
“Crystal” is a classic by Steve — a song about listening to your intuition (“Do you always trust your first feeling?”) — wrapped in a mystical, almost Tolkien-esque landscape of nature. There is the sea, clear water fountains and — his favorite image — mountains. (Steve loves to sing about mountains; just remember “Landslide” and “Leather and Lace.”) She wrote the song years before fame, before shawls and white doves, for Buckingham, her new boyfriend and musical partner. “I wrote the song about him and about myself, when things were still good,” she told David Fricke in the inserts for the relaunch of Buckingham Nicks. “I said, ‘You sing for me.’”
Nicks he knew Buckingham in 1966, years before they became a couple, at a Bay Area youth group event where they sang together “California Dreamin‘”. The first recording of “Crystal”, sung by lindsey in Buckingham Nickssounds like a distant cousin of Laurel Canyon of the classic The Mamas & the Papas. The fact that legendary musicians like guitarist Waddy Wachtel and the drummer Jim Keltner participating only makes it even more “Californian”. It begins with a shimmering strumming and builds smoothly into the chorus, while Nicks adds sunny harmonies.
“Crystal” was one of the tracks Buckingham Nicks that the producer Keith Olsen showed the Mick Fleetwood when he was trying to get the job of producing the band’s next album, Fleetwood Mac. Not just Olsen got the job — as well as Buckingham and Nicks were invited to join the band in December 1974. On the album Fleetwood Mac (1975), the couple produced several compositions, such as “Landslide”, “Monday Morning” and “Rhiannon”. Another contribution was “Crystal“, which they re-recorded for the album. This version is more polished, with the characteristic shine of 1970s pop, while the vocals of Buckingham they sound softer. When he sings “do you always trust your first initial feeling?”, it sounds like a question whispered in his ear. Steve.
Years later, Nicks would record “Crystal” once again — and this time, finally taking lead vocals on his own song. This version, produced by Sheryl Crowtap more than once From Magic to Seductionalongside another collaboration between the two: the unreleased track “If You Ever Did Believe”. And with the sequence of From Magic to Seduction in progress, Nicks want to revisit it one more time.
“It’s funny, because’Crystal‘ has already been recorded three times,” he said. Nicks in 2024. “Maybe we should do a fourth one. I definitely think they should let me be on the score. As soon as I get home, I’m going to make that call and say, ‘Look, you guys have to let me do a song for this — and at least jump off the roof with you.'”
It is not entirely clear how much “Crystal” really talks about Buckingham; in the book Stevie Nicks: Visions, Dreams & Rumors (2014), Zoë Howe writes that the lyrics were inspired by his father and grandfather Steve. Still, it’s hard not to think about her relationship with Buckingham when hearing lines like “and I’ve changed, oh, but you’re still eternal” and “the love that finally, finally found me.”
To hear “Crystal” today causes a tightness in the chest — especially knowing everything the two have experienced since she wrote it. Buckingham was fired from Fleetwood Mac in 2018 and, as Nicks told the Rolling Stone last year, the two have barely spoken since. Steve don’t consider doing a farewell tour with Fleetwood Mac (especially after the death of her great friend Christine McVie in 2022), nor any show that revives material from Buckingham Nicks with lindsey. Fleetwood Mac just rang “Crystal” live in 1975 and 1976, and there are no records of Nicks playing her in a solo career — which only increases the mystery surrounding her. No matter how many times it was recorded, “Crystal” remains a mythical treasure waiting to be rediscovered.
Many fans cling to the famous 1997 music video for “Silver Springs”, which went viral on TikTok in recent years — the one in which Nicks stare Buckingham intensely while singing verses about haunting him forever. But, for those who really know the story of these two musicians, “Crystal” is the definitive song by Steve and lindsey — the one that represents their entire trajectory over the decades and captures the reason they fell in love, before darkness took over. It remains eternal.
