From Latin America, many wanted “The Snow Society” to win at least one of its two nominations at the 2024 Oscars, however, the film went home empty-handed. In the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category, the “Poor Things” team triumphed, while in the Best International Film category, “The Zone of Interest”. That’s all you need to know about the latter.
What is “The Zone of Interest”, the best foreign film at the Oscars 2024, about?
The film is historical and tells the story of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who, in the midst of World War II, try to keep their home life as normal and ideal as possible.
The story is loosely based on Martin Amis’ 2014 novel of the same name. This, in turn, is inspired by some real events.
Since the couple’s home is next to the Auschwitz concentration camp, throughout the plot we see the contrasts between the most heinous crimes of the Nazi regime and the fantasy the family is trying to live. All without the camera going into the scene of annihilation.
“The Zone of Interest” was written and directed by Jonathan Glazer and its cast includes Christian Friedel as Rudolph and Sandra Hüller as Hedwig.
Its triumph on the night of March 10 marked the UK’s first Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
In his acceptance speech, Glazer referred to the war in Gaza:
He also dedicated the film to Alexandria, a 90-year-old woman the director met while making the film who, as a child, was part of the Polish resistance against Nazi occupation. At the age of 12, he circled the concentration camp on his bicycle to drop off apples for the prisoners to find and eat.
She was the inspiration for one of the characters in the film, which is named after her and has a brief appearance.
“The Zone of Interest” won another Oscar
In addition to being crowned Best Foreign Language Film, Jonathan Glazer’s film also won the Best Sound statuette.
With it, it won two of the five categories it was nominated for, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Director.
