With the mainstay of the Francis Lawrence franchise redirected from a screenplay by Michael Lesslie, the film is set years before the Games film, and in part it focuses on a young Coriolanus Snow, who will later be the tyrannical president of Panem. Here, 18-year-old Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope of his declining bloodline, a once proud family that fell from grace on a post-war Capitol.

As the 10th edition of The Hunger Games approaches, Snow is alarmed when he is assigned mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the tribute girl from the poor District 12. But after Lucy Gray gets Panem’s full attention by defiantly singing at the harvest ceremony, Snow thinks he can tip the odds in her favor. Combining their instincts for showbiz and their newfound political proficiency, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and who is a snake …

Schwartzman will play Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, host of the 10th edition of the Hunger Games and nicknamed the “voice of Panem”. Lucretius is the ancestor of Caesar Flickerman, played by Stanley Tucci (with brilliant white crackles) in the original film series.
