Pope Francis issued a new condemnation of all wars on Wednesday, days after angering Kiev and Western capitals by suggesting that Ukraine should surrender and negotiate peace with its Russian invader.
Francis had told Swiss broadcaster RSI that Ukraine should “show the courage of the white flag” and start talks with Russia, but his deputy, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, made clear in an interview Tuesday that Russia should first stop his aggression.
“Many young people, many young people will die (in war). We pray to the Lord to give us the grace to overcome this madness of war, which is always a defeat,” the Pope said during the weekly audience in St. Peter’s. Peter’s Square.
He did not specifically mention Ukraine or any other conflict zone, but said he had previously received a rosary and a copy of the Gospels that belonged to a man killed on an unspecified war front.
Francisco, who is 87 and suffers from breathing and mobility problems, limited his speech to the weekly hearing for the third consecutive week, letting an assistant read most of the prepared texts.
He told worshipers he still had “a bit of a cold.”
