Apparently, the Oscars have managed to recover, albeit slowly, their high audience numbers. According to THR, this year’s awards show was watched by 19.49 million people, the best number in four years. The analysis adds hope to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has faced a series of low audience levels since the pandemic.
Despite the significant decline in viewership during the Oscars broadcast since the pandemic, the numbers have already been in free fall since the 87th edition, in 2015. Industry experts stress that the event needs to “upgrade”, which the Academy is trying to achieve this by including more categories and streamlining the presentations, but, obviously, without losing their indispensable traditions.
For the 2024 Oscars, for example, the event also changed the broadcast times of the awards. The change came as an attempt to avoid declining ratings on the US East Coast. Due to the Oscars’ long broadcast, which usually lasts 3:30 hours, some locations in different time zones were running out as the early hours arrived.
The strategy should probably be maintained in the coming years as well, affecting time in Brazil too, given the objective of remaining in prime time.
