When Alice in Wonderland meets Virgin Suicides in the comedy that’s destroying the US: What’s Sweet East?

This is an indie gem you won’t soon forget! Out in theaters on Wednesday, March 13, The Sweet East is Aliens at the Crossroads of Genres, which explores American excesses while painting a portrait of an Alice in Wonderland heroine turned feminist. The story is about Lillian, a lost and tired high school student who decides to escape on a school trip to Washington, D.C.

A time of innocence… or not

After a trip to the bar where she escaped a robbery reminiscent of Pizzagate – a baseless conspiracy theory linking Hillary Clinton to a pedophile ring – a young woman cuts through a mirror and sends us a song in a game of reflections that immediately captivates her. Even hypnosis. Here he is then catapulted on a hallucinogenic and trippy journey, borrowing references from comedy and cinema, sometimes romantic, sometimes terrifying, but always magnetic.

Much more than a journey of self-discovery, the feature film offers a confusing and irreverent fresco of America through Lillian’s encounters with (a)typical characters from the country, from Maryland to Vermont, via New York.

In Uncle Sam’s big family, we demand armed conspiracy theorists, extremists, punks, neo-Nazis, junkies, rednecks, but also activist intellectuals; And we get the notion of society and its freedom threatened by the influence of power, money and toxic people.

Talia Ryder: A Star Is Born

Fiercely modern and original in its storytelling, Sweet East is also on top form thanks to Sean Price Williams’ perspective. The New Yorker described it as “Cinematographer of the best and most important independent films of the last decadeThe man who worked in Earth Queen, Marjorie Prime or Good Time signs his first feature film as a director here and gives his film a vintage aesthetic to die for, thanks to his 16mm camera.

On the face of it, Talia Ryder is so impressive that she charms us with her talent in the shoes of Lillian and already stands out as a great actress. He stars alongside stars including Simon Rex (Red Rocket) and sensations Ayo Edebir (Bear) and Jacob Ellord (Euphoria). An impossible odyssey!
