Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and his presidential candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye were released from prison in Dakar on Thursday evening (14), 10 days before scheduled elections in the West African country.
The liberation was celebrated by thousands of people, who took to the streets of the region to sing and dance until the early hours of the morning.
Sonko, the main protagonist of a bloody standoff with Senegalese power since 2021, was disqualified by the Constitutional Council from participating in January’s presidential elections.
His group, with his consent, nominated Faye as a candidate in his place. As a result, his right-hand man’s candidacy is one of 19 selected for the March 24 elections.
The releases now inject new energy, with unknown effects, into the country’s current election campaign. The driving force attributed to Sonko and his popularity among young people will likely influence the dynamic. .
