The sailor who likes spinach should make it to the big screen. The famous character Popeye will receive a live-action film in the cinema, here’s what information comes from the Variety.

Producer Chernin Entertainment, together with King Features, has already announced that it will be responsible for the project. Popeye first appeared as a comic book character in the 1920s.

The film is currently in development and will have a big budget. The writing team includes Michael Caleo, who worked on the film The family AND The Sopranos.

The last live-action Popeye was played by Robin Williams

Popeye celebrated his 95th birthday this year after first appearing in the 1929 comic titled Thimble Theater. The character spawned feature films and animated series in his heyday and may be one of the first mass merchandised models in several generations.

Two years ago, Popeye was considered one of the main inspirations for the men’s collections of Moschino, Supreme and A Bathing Ape.

Popeye is still the face of McCall Farms spinach, as in the cartoons, the vegetable gives the sailor superpowers to defeat his enemies, which features Popeye’s logo and face on canned products.
